Carry on captain

Gary Neville is more than capable of playing on for another campaign, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.


The club captain has been plagued with injuries in recent years, but has battled back to cement his place as an important squad member this season.

The 35-year-old’s current contract comes to an end in the summer, but his commanding display against Ronaldinho in the demolition of AC Milan on Wednesday night showed Neville still has an important role to play.

"I can see him playing on next season," declared Sir Alex. "He’s a player who has got where he is in life because he’s got the will to do it."

"As I’ve said before when you’ve been out injured for a year and a half it’s not easy. We don’t play him every week because we know the nature of his body, but on an occasion like Wednesday he was outstanding.
"

"He may be 35 years of age, but he showed such drive and every time the ball went forward he was up in support. I think he’s a great example."

Another player with a decision to make about his future is Paul Scholes. Like Neville, his contract is due to expire in the summer, but Sir Alex fully expects the midfield wizard to be plying his trade at Old Trafford next season.

"I haven’t spoken to Scholesy about it, but I expect him to stay, added the boss.
